Vatsala Elephant: The Oldest Elephant Is No More

Vatsala, known as the oldest elephant in the world, lived her final days in Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. She lived for over 100 years and sadly died on July 8, 2025. According to Wikipedia, she was born around 1917. However, she was not officially listed as the world’s oldest elephant due to a lack of definitive birth records. As per the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest elephant currently recognized is Lin Wang.

Vatsala Elephant Age

Born around 1917, she died at the age of 108 on July 8, 2025. She took her last breath in Panna Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh. She was also known as the ‘Nani’ and ‘Dai Maa’ (grandmother and foster mother) of the forest because whenever a new calf was born, she would approach the elephant mother and care for both mother and calf, just like a grandmother.

How Vatsala Elephant Died

Due to her advanced age, she lost her eyesight and her body became weak. During her difficult time, forest officials of Panna Tiger Reserve cared for her as if she were their own. They would guide her daily to the Khairaiyaan drain for a bath. She spent her last years very peacefully and with gentle care. On July 8, 2025, she lay down near her favorite stream, took her last breath there, and passed away peacefully.
