On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI 171—a Boeing 787–8 Dreamliner—departed from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad at 13:38 IST (08:08 UTC). Only 30–32 seconds after takeoff, the plane couldn’t climb, fell, and smashed into the Meghani Nagar region, close to the BJ Medical College hostel, detonating on impact. Out of the 242 individuals on board (230 passengers, comprising 11 children and 2 infants, plus 12 crew members), 241 lost their lives; just one passenger survived, British-Indian Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who managed to escape through an emergency exit.

- Emergency response involved 500+ personnel from the Indian Army, Coast Guard, NDRF, local authorities, and support teams.
- The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), assisted by UK/US teams and Boeing, is now conducting a full technical investigation.
- Initial indicators suggest a loss of thrust during lift; a MAYDAY call was issued before contact was lost.
